1 Introduction

This specification describes objective demands to the supplier for construction, production, control and deliveries of wooden sleepers in accordance with the Bane NOR requirements and expectations.

2 Scope

This specification is applicable to supplies of wooden sleepers for normal track, turnouts and bridges to Bane NOR. This specification deals with sleepers made from Beech or European oak.

3 Forms, dimensions and tolerances

Sleepers and bearers shal have a nominally rectangular cross section as shown in Figur 1

Figur 1: Cross section

Tabell 1 shows the dimensions of the sleepers

Tabell 1: Dimensions

Sleeper Dimensions (mm)
Length l (width) e (height) r (min. cutting surface) d (min. cutting surface)
Normal sleeper 2500 240 140 70 160
30 tonn sleeper 2600 260 160 80 160
Turnout bearer 2300 - 7500 240 140 80 200
Bridge bearer 2500 - 5000 230 230 227 227
Bridge bearer 2500 - 5000 230 180 227 227

Tolerances given in EN 13145 shall apply to all sleepers and bearers ready for preservation and use.

4 Defects and quality features

All sleepers and bearers shall comply with the requirements given in EN 13145, chapter 6.

5 Durability and preservation

All sleepers and bearers shall comply with the requirements given in EN 13145, chapter 7 and the requirements for Maximum density before impregnation and Preservative below:

5.1 Maximum density before impregnation

Prior to impregnation the wood species shall not exceed the following density:

  • Beech:800 kg/m3
  • Oak:900 kg/m3

5.2 Preservative

  • Sleepers shall be impregnated with "SleeperProtect" oil.
  • All active substances in the preservative shall be approved for use according to EU Regulation No 528/2012 (Biocidal Product Regulation)

5.2.1 Impregnation process parameters for Oak sleepers

  • Oak sleepers shall be treated with "Sleeper protect" oil in a Vacuum-Pressure process according to Tabell 2

Tabell 2: Process parameters for Oak sleepers
Process step Pressure (bar) Time (minutes)
Vacuum - 0,8 60
Pressure 8,0 100
Post vacuum -0,8 180

5.2.2 Impregnation process parameters for Beech sleepers

  • Beech sleepers shall be treated initially with a water based Cu-preservative before "Sleeper Protect" treatment
  • Beech sleepers shall be treated with "Sleeper protect" oil in a Rüping process according to Tabell 3.
  • Density shall not exceed 950 kg/m3 when Rüping process is applied.

Tabell 3: Process parameters for Beech sleepers
Process step Pressure (bar) Time (minutes)
Pre Pressure 3 20
Pressure 8,0 100
Post vacuum -0,8 180

6 Electrical resistance

  • The electrical resistance in a single sleeper from rail to rail shall be minimum 5,6 kOhm when measured in accordance with the principles in EN 13146-5

7 Fastenings

7.1 Normal sleeper

  • Sleepers for normal track shall be delivered with baseplate SK 3131 for Pandrol e-clip rail fastening installed.
  • The baseplate shall be delivered from Pandrol Ltd, or from a supplier holding a valid Pandrol Ltd licence for manufacturing the baseplate.
  • The baseplates shall be installed with sleeper screws SK 1086 and spring washers Fe6/Fn6
  • The baseplates shall be positioned and installed to result in a track gauge of 1437 mm with tolerance +/- 2 mm

7.2 30 ton sleeper

  • Sleepers for 30 ton axle load shall be delivered with complete Pandrol Fastclip FC rail fastening mounted in accordance with Pandrol drawing 13833:
    • Baseplate SK 3049
    • Pandrol FC 1501 clips with toe insulators
    • Pandrol PU 10mm rail pad
  • The baseplate, clips and rail pad shall be delivered from Pandrol Ltd, or from a supplier holding a valid Pandrol Ltd licence for manufacturing the components.
  • The baseplates shall be installed with sleeper screws SK 1086 and spring washers Fe6/Fn6
  • The baseplates shall be positioned and installed to result in a track gauge of 1437 mm with tolerance +/- 2 mm

8 Factory production control

  • The factory production control shall comply with the requirements given in EN 13145, chapter 8.
  • Before delivery, Beech sleepers shall be tested to ensure compliance with the requirements in Overbygning/Tresviller#Electrical resistance

9 Customer inspection

  • The supplier shall inform Bane NOR when the sleepers ready for customer inspection.
  • The sleepers shall be stored on the cutting edge to allow customer inspection of each sleeper, ref. Figur 2.
  • The distance between the stored sleepers shall be minimum 10 cm and the distance between each row shall be minimum 1 meter.
Figur 2: Sleeper storing
  • The turnout bearers shall be stored even in horizontal rows and shall be marked with its lengths.
  • The turnout and bridge bearers shall be stored separated, and the turnout bearers in different lengths.
  • Bane NOR control and sorting of sleepers are binding for both parties (Bane NOR and Supplier).
  • Bane NOR has the right to refuse receipt of produced sleepers at his own discretion.

10 Marking

Sleepers and bearers shall be marked according to EN 13145, chapter 9.

11 Transportation

The loading and transportation shall be effected in a way not damaging the sleepers. Loading and transportation shall be effected according to agreement with the Bane NOR.
