1 SCOPE

1.1 Use

The single mode optical fibre cables are recommended for installation in ducts and tubes in outdoor environment.

1.2 Purpose

The purpose of the technical specification is to provide guidance for the production, test procedures and delivery of products according to stated requirements. The technical specification contains technical and functional requirements to be fulfilled.

The cables shall provide capability to transfer information signals. The cables shall be free of halogens and metallic elements. The cables shall withstand relevant loads that may be present.

2 REQUIREMENTS

2.1 Optical requirements for the fibres

a) Optical fibres shall be single mode fibres according to ITU-T G.652.D (Table 4/G.652 - G.652.D attributes) with dimensions 9/125 µm.

2.2 Cable types and mechanical requirements

a) The following mechanical requirements apply for ordinary optical fibre cables:

  1. Prefered number of optical fibres are 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, 144 (multiple of 12).

F.number is an uniqe 9-digit number identifying the specific production variant.

2.3 Position and identification of optical fibres

Cables may be constructed in one of two ways which will affect the identification and position of the optical fibres.

  1. Concentric structure is possible for cables independent of the number of optical fibres.
  2. Compact structure is possible for cables containing up to 144 optical fibres.

2.3.1 Primary cladding and colour code

a) The optical single mode fibres shall have a primary cladding.

  1. The minimum diameter of the primary cladding shall be 250 µm.
  2. The colouring of the primary cladding shall be durable and resistent to cleaning aids.
  3. It shall be easy to clean off the primary cladding with natural means without health risk. The means and method shall be provided.

b) The primary cladding shall be coloured according to the colours defined in IEC 60304. The following colour code shall be used:

2.3.2 Secondary protection (tube)

a) (Up to) 12 optical fibres with primary cladding and a filling compound (for water protection) shall be contained in a tube.

b) The filling compound shall be easily removeable by natural means without health risk. The means and method shall be provided.

2.3.2.1 Concentric structure

a) Cables with a concentric structure shall have a central strength member (FRP) of glass yarn or aramid yarn of 35 mm.

b) The central member may have a coating to adjust the diameter to the number of tubes in the first layer of tubes.

c) The first layer of tubes may be with 6, 8 or 12 tubes containing optical fibres.

  1. If the number of tubes is less than 6, 8 or 12, the remaining position(s) shall be made up of filling cord(s) to make up a circular layout for the cross section area.

d) If the cable consists of more than 12 tubes (96 optical fibres), there shall be a second layer with tubes (and filling cord(s)) .

  1. The first layer shall be with 8 tubes.
  2. The remaining tubes(s) shall reside in the second layer.
  3. The remaining position(s) shall be made up of filling cord(s).

e) The tubes containing optical fibres shall have the following colour code within a concentric layer:

f) If there are more layers with tubes containing optical fibres, the colour coding of e) is repeated.

2.3.2.2 Compact structure

(Strength members are foreseen in the outer sheath of the cable - see design of the outer sheath.)

a) The tubes may be position in an orderly or random fashion.

  1. In most cases (cables with many optical fibres) there is no need for filling cords.
  2. The tubes are identified with colour coding according to IEC 60603.
  3. The colouring identification of the tubes shall be durable and resistent to cleaning aids.

2.3.3 Concentric and compact structures

a) The tubes shall be protected against water.

  1. Possible methods are filling compound or swellable tape (non-exclusive list).
  2. A thin polymer tape may be added over the tubes to ease the futher production of the cable.

2.4 Cable constructions

a) A rip thread should be added under the outer sheath for all following cable types.

b) The cable shall have a concentric structure. (Or refer to the technical specification for Fiberoptisk_kabel_-_G♦♦-SM_9/125_QXXE_(Light)).

c) The outer sheath shall be HDPE with black colour and minimum 1,5 mm thick.

  1. The crush properties shall be in accordance with requirements given in previous table.

2.5 Tools

a) It shall be possible to terminate and splice the fiber optic cables with normal tools for terminating optical fibres.

2.6 Fire properties (not relevant)

a) The self-extinguishing cables (with designation G♦♦-SM 9/125 QXXI) shall fulfill the requirements in IEC 60332-1.

2.7 Markings

a) The outer sheath of the cable shall have easy readable and durable markings with the following information:

  1. manufacturer's name
  2. designation
  3. F.number
  4. accumulative length at every metre of the actual production length (note)
  5. preferably also a uniqe production identity
  6. year of production

(note) The first and the last length figures shall be readable at/on the production package (drum or other package).

b) € marking is not relevant.

2.8 Quality certificate

a) A quality certificate containing test results or control check points shall accompanying the cable and the invoice. The quality certificate shall indicate the purchase number.

2.9 Documentation, language

a) Product sheets shall be available in Norwegian.

3 ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS

a) Temperature

Storage temperature -40 °C to +70 °C
Installation temperature -10 °C to +60 °C
Operating temperature -40 °C til +60 °C

b) All cables shall be fitted with protective caps at both ends to avoid intrusion of moisture and contamination.

c) Production, use and disposal of the products shall be possible obeying national regulations (Forurensningsloven).
